After a minor car accident, you did not think you sustained injuries. When you experienced neck discomfort, you let your physician examine you, which led to a whiplash diagnosis.
WebMD breaks down whiplash treatment options. Understand how to get your pain under control and protect your right to compensation.
Soon after your diagnosis, apply ice packs to your neck. Ice your neck for 15 minutes every three to four hours for at least two days. To protect your skin, cover the ice in a thin cloth or towel.
Talk with your doctor about taking painkillers such as naproxen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, acetaminophen and ibuprofen. While you do not need a prescription for these over-the-counter medications, you may experience side effects while taking them. Talk to your doctor about using them regularly, and ask about prescription medication if over-the-counter pain remedies do not work.
After icing your neck for two to three days, switch to moist heat. You want to give the swelling time to go down before applying wet, warm towels. Alternatively, you may take a warm bath.
Your doctor may recommend you use a neck brace or collar for added support. Use braces and collars as a short-term solution, as using them too much could weaken your neck muscles.
Recovery time depends on injury severity. Because patients heal at different rates, your whiplash may clear in a few days, or it could take weeks.
Take your time while healing from whiplash. By working with the right medical team, you improve your chances of making a full recovery from another’s negligence.
